Positive Spin Offs

What a great weekend at the Saltscapes Expo for #TeamMyles2014 members and for me personally. After our morning practice, I stayed in town and  came to the show a little early before my shift and stopped at the Taste of Nova Scotia main stage to say hello to fellow team mate, Christine White who was busy working the crowd as they gathered for the Chowder cook off. As they asked for volunteers to assist the chefs in their chowder trail cook-off, I found myself with hand outstretched and jumping up on stage to be a sous chef (assistant) for Chef Jon of Rhubarb. Anyone who knows me knows I love cooking shows so this was me living the dream. Myles was running around the expo greeting people so both he and I were introduced and got a plug in for @BNMarathon and our booth. After that experience, I went to my shift, along with Tina Griggs and Rob Ramshaw, at the booth. We had a great time meeting and greeting people throughout the afternoon.chef jonme and Myles

Last night, I went to my yoga class @BreathingSpaceYoga studio in Windsor. This is just one more of the amazing benefits we have as Team Myles members. For me personally, I am grateful that one of the studios is close to where I live. Driving to the city twice a week for practice sometimes limits the amount of extra travel for other things such as gym and yoga time. This was my fourth weekly session with instructor Janet Budden at the Windsor studio and I have learned so much. She is a very patient and knowledgeable teacher. Every week is different and every week, I feel new muscles groups being stretched.

Another positive aspect of my Team Myles experience has been my involvement with starting up a running club at our school here in the valley. We are a small P-8 school with about 160 students. After joining Team Myles, I talked with another staff member and as a result we formed the group with a goal of bringing fitness through running to as many children as we could. We practice 3 times per week after school and have entered teams for both the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Fun Run in Canning on May 10 and the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run on Blue Nose weekend. Our Home and School Association has generously agreed to help fund a bus for both events so that we can send as many children that are interested. It’s pretty exciting to know that 50 students (30 % of our school) have added running to their schedule.  Not all of them will attend the events, but the opportunity is there should they decide to go. Our neighbouring school (with whom we share a phys ed teacher) is also involved and sending 20 students to the Valley run.

In addition to the running itself, there are so many positive spin offs associated with Team Myles and I know every member has a similar experience to share…
